ABSTRACT
The value of monotheism
should be the basis for attitudes and behavior, including in daily life within
the home. However, in reality, the implementation of these values still faces
various obstacles. The purpose of this paper is to examine the challenges that
arise in implementing the value of monotheism within the family and surrounding
community. These challenges include declining religious awareness, the
influence of a modern, materialistic lifestyle, a lack of social awareness
among residents, and a lack of role models. This research uses a qualitative
approach through literature review and simple observations of the community’s
social conditions. The results indicate that the value of monotheism is often
understood only as a religious concept, but is not fully reflected in attitudes
of honesty, responsibility, mutual respect, and concern for the surrounding
environment. Therefore, a joint effort is needed through the role of families,
community leaders, and the habituation of Islamic values in daily life so that
the value of monotheism can be truly realized within the home environment.

Introduction
The values of Tawhid constitute the primary foundation of
Islamic teachings, which relate not only to the belief in Allah SWT but are
also reflected in daily social behavior, including within the residential
environment. The home environment serves as the initial space for shaping an
individual’s character, attitudes, and patterns of social interaction. However,
in practice, the implementation of Tawhid values in such environments is often
not yet optimal. Various social phenomena—such as low levels of concern among
residents, the decline of a mutual assistance culture, and the rise of
individualistic attitudes—indicate significant challenges in applying Tawhid
values to everyday life. Several studies also reveal that the influence of
modernization and the massive use of digital media have contributed to shifting
religious values within family and community settings (Assaad, 2014; Ghufron,
2024). This situation demonstrates that research regarding the challenges of
implementing Tawhid values in the home environment is crucial for understanding
these issues more deeply and contextually.
A number of previous studies have predominantly discussed
Tawhid within the context of formal education, theological studies, and its
application in the economic and institutional sectors of the Muslim community.
While extensive research has been conducted on the role of Tawhid in economic
empowerment and the social life of the Ummah, the focus of these discussions
remains generally macro and normative (Harris & Khilmia, 2023; Sukma &
Zulheldi, 2025). Meanwhile, research specifically examining the challenges of
implementing Tawhid values at the smallest environmental level—namely the home
and the immediate neighborhood—remains relatively limited. Furthermore, few
studies link the value of Tawhid to daily social realities, such as
interactions between neighbors and family life patterns. This indicates a
research gap that needs to be addressed.
This research presents an innovation by focusing on the home
environment as the primary basis for applying Tawhid values in social life.
This study views Tawhid not only as a concept of faith but also as a practical
value reflected in honesty, responsibility, social concern, and interpersonal
relationships. By highlighting the real challenges faced by the community in
daily life, this research is expected to provide a new contribution to Islamic
studies, particularly concerning the strengthening of Tawhid values based on
family and community environments. This approach is intended to complement
previous research and serve as a reference for more applicable social-religious
development efforts.
Research
Methods
Based on qualitative techniques and observation, this
research involves the direct observation of the research subjects.
Research
Objectives
This research aims to understand and analyze the various
challenges faced by the community in implementing Tawhid values within the
residential environment. Specifically, the study seeks to identify the social,
cultural, and behavioral obstacles that influence the application of Tawhid
values in daily life. Furthermore, this research aims to examine the extent to
which Tawhid values are reflected in the attitudes and interactions among
residents, such as honesty, responsibility, social concern, and mutual respect.
Through this study, it is expected that a more contextual overview of the
reality of Tawhid implementation at home will be obtained, while simultaneously
providing a basis for formulating efforts to strengthen Tawhid values in a way
that is more applicable and relevant to current community conditions.
Results
and Discussion
The values of Tawhid fundamentally refer to the belief in the
Oneness of Allah SWT, which is reflected not only in aspects of worship but
also in daily attitudes and behavior. Tawhid does not stop at oral confession
or inner belief alone; rather, it serves as a moral foundation that guides
humans to be honest, responsible, fair, and compassionate toward others. In the
context of the home environment, the implementation of Tawhid values can be
seen in how individuals interact with family members and neighbors, uphold
trustworthiness (amanah), avoid behaviors that harm others, and foster mutual
respect and assistance.
The home environment plays a vital role as it is the primary
social space where an individual learns and practices religious values. The
family and the surrounding community serve as the main media for instilling a
practical understanding of Tawhid through role modeling and daily habits.
Therefore, the successful implementation of Tawhid values is heavily influenced
by the quality of social interaction and the culture developing within that
environment. Research findings indicate that the implementation of Tawhid
values in the residential vicinity still faces various challenges. One of the
main challenges is the declining public awareness in linking Tawhid values with
social behavior. Tawhid is often understood strictly within ritualistic
aspects, such as formal worship, without being followed by the application of
moral values in everyday life. Additionally, the influence of modern
lifestyles—which tend to be individualistic and materialistic—contributes to
the weakening of social concern among residents.
Another challenge is the lack of role modeling, both within
the family and the community. The discrepancy between the teachings conveyed
and the behaviors demonstrated makes it difficult for Tawhid values to be fully
internalized. On the other hand, diminishing social interaction due to busy
schedules and digital media usage has caused values such as togetherness,
empathy, and social responsibility to be practiced less frequently. These
conditions indicate that strengthening Tawhid values in the home environment
requires a more contextual, sustainable approach based on real-life practice in
daily activities.
Case Study: Challenges in
Implementing Tawhid Values Within the Residential Environment
In a residential neighborhood where the majority of residents
are Muslim, formal religious activities are quite prominent. Mosques and prayer
rooms (musala) are always crowded during prayer times, and routine religious
study sessions (pengajian) continue to take place. However, upon closer
observation, the application of Tawhid (the oneness of God) values in daily
life is not yet fully reflected in the social behavior of the residents.
In neighborhood life, there is still a noticeable lack of
concern for the surrounding environment. For example, when a resident faces
economic difficulties or a misfortune, assistance often comes from only a few
individuals. Many residents choose not to get involved, citing busy schedules
or feeling that it is not their personal responsibility. In reality, the value
of Tawhid teaches that faith in Allah must be manifested through compassion and
care for others.
Another challenge is evident within the family unit. Some
parents instill the teachings of Tawhid in their children only as far as ritual
obligations, such as prayer and reciting the Quran, but place less emphasis on
the importance of honesty, responsibility, and mutual respect in daily life.
Consequently, children grow up with a theoretical understanding of Tawhid that
is not yet fully realized in their social behavior.
Furthermore, technological developments and the use of
gadgets have also influenced social interactions. Many residents focus more on
digital activities than on direct interaction with their neighbors. This has
caused social ties to weaken, making values such as togetherness, empathy, and
ukhuwah (brotherhood) increasingly rare. This condition shows that the
challenge of implementing Tawhid values stems not only from a lack of religious
understanding but also from shifts in modern lifestyles.
This case study illustrates that implementing Tawhid values
at home requires sustained effort starting from simple things. Parental role
modeling, strengthening social interaction, and the awareness that Tawhid must
be reflected in daily attitudes and behavior are the primary keys to overcoming
these challenges.
CONCLUSION
Based on the discussion above, it can be concluded
that the implementation of Tawhid values within the residential environment
still faces various social, cultural, and behavioral challenges. Tawhid, which
should serve as the foundation for conduct and interaction, is often understood
only through the lenses of faith and ritual worship, without being accompanied
by practical application in daily life. This is evident in the low levels of
social concern, the weakening of mutual assistance, and the emergence of
individualistic behavior within the community.
These challenges are further exacerbated by modern
lifestyle shifts, excessive use of digital media, and the decline of direct
social interaction among residents. Additionally, a lack of role modeling
within families and the community serves as a significant factor hindering the
full internalization of Tawhid values. In reality, the home environment is the
primary and most strategic space for shaping an individual’s character and
behavior based on Islamic values.
Therefore, strengthening the implementation of Tawhid
values at home must be achieved by habituating attitudes and behaviors that
reflect faith—such as honesty, responsibility, social concern, and mutual
respect. The roles of the family, community leaders, and socio-religious
activities are key to fostering the awareness that Tawhid is not only a matter
of belief but must also be manifested in real and sustainable community life.
